The Master Singers of Virginia Youth Choral Program seeks a dynamic individual for a unique role: to spearhead and develop MSVA’s youth choir program. This is a part-time conductor post (rehearsals once per week), and a position that will kick-start our youth ensemble(s).

Essential duties of the role include leading all rehearsals of the youth choral ensemble(s), as well as conducting in concert performances in collaboration with an accompanist/associate director.  In addition, the director will work closely with the Master Singers of Virginia’s artistic director (Dr. Erik Reid Jones) to conceive and plan cohesive concert sets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enable youth participants to grow in musicianship and love of choral music/singing.

  • Actively and passionately recruit new youth and build the ensemble(s).

  • Develop and implement the educational vision and short/long-range musical plans for our youth program.

Other Responsibilities:

Anticipated rehearsal schedule will follow the typical school year calendar- September through early June.

  • Create rehearsal schedule and work closely with Associate Director to run weekly rehearsals.

  • Track ensemble(s) progress regarding rehearsals, performances, and educational development.

  • Build effective teaching relationships with ensemble singers.

  • Lead ensemble(s) through performances; specific schedule TBD.

  • Communicate with singers and their families by means of email, phone, and direct contact.

  • Work in tandem with MSVA organization staff and volunteers.

  • Lead recruitment efforts.

  • The Director will serve as a non-voting member of the MSVA Board of Directors to represent the interests of the youth ensemble(s).

  • Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to development as a conductor and director.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music or related degree.

  • Substantial experience working with youth of varied ages and backgrounds.

  • Strong vocal and conducting technique.

  • Genuine passion for working with children in the choral setting.

  • Working knowledge of the human voice- particularly developing youth voices.

  • Proficient keyboard skills.



  • $5,000-$7,000 per year dependent upon experience and qualifications.
